The Max-Planck-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften e.V. (MPG) takes the protection of your personal data very seriously. We process personal data gathered when visiting our websites in compliance with applicable data protection legislation, and only to the extent necessary to provide a functioning website and our content and services.

A. Provision of the Website

1. Log Data

Each time you visit our website, the following data are gathered temporarily:

  • Your IP address
  • Date and time of your access
  • Address of the page visited
  • Address of the previously visited website (referrer)
  • Name and version of your browser / operating system (if transmitted)

These data are stored in log files to ensure website functionality and IT system security (legal basis: Art. 6 (1) lit. f GDPR). Log data are deleted after seven days at the latest.

B. Web Analytics (Matomo)

We use Matomo for statistical data collection. Every time our website is accessed, our system logs (stored only on MPG servers):

  • IP address, anonymized by abbreviation
  • Cookies pk_id and pk_sess (to distinguish visitors)
  • Previously visited URL (referrer)
  • Browser name, version and language setting
  • Operating system name and version
  • If JavaScript is active: URLs visited, page visit times, screen resolution, supported formats

You may object to data collection by:

Data are deleted after final annual access statistics have been compiled. Legal basis: Art. 6 (1) lit. f GDPR and § 25 para. 2 no. 2 TDDDG.

C. Form Security

Friendly Captcha

To prevent misuse of forms, we use Friendly Captcha, which collects: request headers (User-Agent, Origin, Referer), puzzle data, widget version, and a timestamp. An anonymized counter per IP address is stored on the edge network for difficulty adjustment; no personal data such as name or email are collected. Data are anonymized. Legal basis: Art. 6 (1) lit. f GDPR and § 25 para. 2 no. 2 TDDDG.

CSRF Token

A digital token (csrf_token) is used to protect form data in transit. It is not stored on users' devices and no data are stored by the MPG when the token is used.

D. Data Transmission

Management and storage of your personal data is carried out by selected service providers within the scope of commissioned data processing. Your personal data are only transmitted to public institutions and authorities if legally required or for criminal prosecution purposes. The data are not shared with third parties for any other purposes.

E. YouTube

Some pages include external links to YouTube videos. External links are provided with a preview image generated via YouTube's API. All YouTube content is subject to YouTube's terms of use. Google's privacy policy is available at policies.google.com/privacy.
